Lecture Overview:
The development and use of targeted biologic agents has demonstrated efficacy in inducing and maintaining remission in many patients with Crohn’s disease. There is a clear educational need that exists in the gastroenterology community for an updated understanding of the appropriate patient selection and their status before initiating biologic therapies with the goal to optimize timing of their use.
Target Audience:
This activity is intended for Gastroenterology and select Internal Medicine healthcare professionals.
Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
  • Review the current role of biologic therapies and the patient selection criteria for optimal therapyOutline emerging data on the use of mono-therapy and combination therapy as they relate to impact on clinical practiceDescribe new strategies to maximize biologic efficacy and durability of response.Discuss how and when to integrate newly approved biologic therapies into the existing treatment algorithm
Lecturer Biography:
Dr. Panaccione is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Calgary and the Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Panaccione graduated from the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario) with a degree in Medicine in 1993. He went on to complete his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training at the University of Western Ontario and is certified as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Dr. Panaccione completed advanced training in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He joined the faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary in 1999. He has lectured across North America on various topics in inflammatory bowel disease and has delivered over 120 lectures in the last five years.

He is the author of many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on inflammatory bowel disease. His special interest lies in the fields of advanced immunomodulation and biological therapy. He is a recognized authority on the use of infliximab (Remicade®) in Canada and co-authored the guidelines on the use of infliximab for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. He actively participates in clinical trials of new therapeutic agents in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

He is presently the medical director for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation Calgary Chapter and sits on the Medical Advisory council for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada.

His other interest is medical education. He has been recognized as a gold star lecturer, small groups leader, and clinical preceptor by the University of Calgary Medical School. He has been selected as the top post-graduate teacher in Gastroenterology by the gastroenterology fellows three times most recently in 2003-2004. Most recently, he was selected as one of the University of Calgary’s “greatest teachers”
